Exhibition Dates: 22nd July – 19th August

Lanchester Research Gallery is delighted to present a solo exhibition of Pilar Montero’s work. Transits and Crossings: New Works on Paper includes three chapters of work, which explore the aesthetic potential of the contemporary nomadic condition. Montero looks back to travellers in eighteenth century Europe: Pasavant in England, Ponz in Holland, England, France and Belgium, and Goethe in Italy, to consider the bind of alienation and pursuit of knowledge that the travelling artist confronts. The exhibition forms a poetic mediation on transience, migration and translation, and points to the problems, and potentials, of traversing territories and cultures within an inconsistent globalised art system.

Mirrors is composed of a series of photographs of the surface of water from different proximities. Water symbolises the antagonism of being both barrier, border and exclusion, as well as being constantly in motion and communication with infinite lands.

Variations on Vocabulary is a study of translation as an artistic strategy and considers the significance of linguistic effects and subtleties of tone in understanding another culture through language.

Little Shoes on Paper is an intermediary body of work between Mirrors and Variations on Vocabulary. The shoes are made from modest materials, and using domestic production methods, are worked into a large-scale installation which deals with the alterity and otherness of the nomad-artist.

Transits and Crossings: New Works on Paper presents a series of works that reflect on physical and psychological territories.

Pilar Montero is currently Visiting Academic Fellow in the Visual Arts Research Group, Coventry University, and Professor of Fine Art at Madrid University.
